Happy Earth Day

This is a little ditty written for the 20th anniversary of Earth Day by me and my buddy Rebecca Troop. It was for a Brownie Girl Scout event, so it's audience was elementary age girls.

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Reduce, re-use, recycle

It’s good for us today

Reduce, re-use, recycle

Tomorrow it will pay

If we all are careful

Of what we throw away

There will always be places

Where children can play

There will always be trees

For buildings and for homes

There will be resources

When we all are gone

But if we are not careful

We’ll fill our earth with waste

Then we will be crowded

By things thrown out in haste

Soooo . . . . . . .

Reduce, re-use, recycle

It’s good for us today

Reduce, re-use, recycle

Tomorrow it will pay

this spring i rejoice,
with nature's return,
each sparrow and robin,
each blossom and fern.

they seem like lost friends,
i'm so happy to see,
as if they'd arrived,
especially for me.

the world's come alive,
with sounds long unheard,
the peep of a frog,
the song of a bird.

each new one I hear,
or I spot on the wing,
feels like a bright gift.
for my opening.

and with each return,
i start to revive,
my heart fills with hope,
and i feel alive.

Welcome Spring

to say you make my heart sing,
seems so trite,
but i will say it anyway,
because it's right.

you open my soul wide,
and i feel God's love,
so i open my arms,
to the heavens above.

i laugh and i spin,
and i turn toward the sun,
i give thanks to God,
for now spring has come.

Mother Mary

i've identified the longing,
i wrote about before,
i'm lonesome for my children,
who live far from my door.

I tried to call this afternoon,
i guess no one was free,
i wonder what they're doing,
and why they're not calling me.

it's tough to be a mother,
with my kids so far away,
sometimes i really miss them,
i'm not ashamed to say.

don't misunderstand me,
i'm happy they are grown,
and making their own choices,
and have lives of their own.

i know how much they love me,
but i'm still feeling blue,
a mother's heart feels love so deep,
and sometimes longing too.

knowing there are other moms,
riding this same boat,
gives me strength and courage,
to keep my heart afloat.

i think being a mother,
is God's most precious gift,
with Holy Week upon us,
i'm reflecting upon this.

for Mary felt more pain,
than i will ever know,
she loved her son so dearly,
and had to let him go.

i thank her for her sacrifice,
and reflect upon her part,
i know she understands my pain,
i feel hers in my heart.

longing

today i feel a longing,
not sure what it's for,
is it here inside my house,
or outside of the door.

will i find it when i go to church,
i guess i'll wait and see,
but of one thing i am certain,
something's calling me.
